gravitational lensing - iSight geeks

Matt

Matt Turk has written a hack to illustrate gravtiational lensing with video input from iSight through a Mac. Just singular isothermal sphere lens, hack it yourself for other geometries, eh?

Nifty.

see here for lensing project page

and for powers of four blog entry

I will note that the possibilities here are endless, for people wanting realistic multiple magnified images...

Don't know if either of you guys have heard of Photo Booth (this link takes you to the iMac iSight page -- Photo Booth doesn't have its own page -- weird).

Anyway, it is an app packaged with Macs with built-in iSights (can be used on any Mac with an iSight, as long as you don't see anything morally wrong getting the app via BitTorrent), and it is just a fun little app for taking stills with your camera, but you can apply effects like mirroring, fake sepia tone, fake thermal camera, etc. Matt's hack looks a lot like one of the Photo Booth effects. I wonder if they will ever allow plugins or some other way to add your own effects, like say a gravitational lens!

The new built-in iSight with Photo Booth is great. It allowed me to take a picture of what happened to my new laptop the day after I got it in the mail. Such shoddy workmanship! Darn you, Chris, for convincing me to purchase one of these blasted machines!
